Day 29: Assess

Day 29: Assess

So, we really wanted to give you more in this closet cleanse challenge so we took it to the expert! We wanted you to hear it from not just us, but from someone that can speak from the eyes of a wife, mom, full-time professional who holds it down when it comes to not only your closets but also fashion. We asked Mary Ciancibello what advice she would give you entering into this Fall 2014 Fashion Season! She is a professional wardrobe stylist so, if you find it hard in anyway to make those decisions on your own and need more than just your visits to Vincent, she can help you decide what to give away, keep and what to add in your closet! Read what she has to say about Fall fashion and check out all her amazing work from CTV morning live to your closets!   ACx2

Assessing your wardrobe for Fall 2014

By Mary Ciancibello

Assessing your wardrobe is no easy task. Most of us look into our literally overflowing closets and think : "I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!"

I get it. Like most of you, I am a mom of 3 young angels, a wife, a professional, a cook, a housekeeper, and the list goes on and on…we don't have a lot of time to think about putting together an outfit out of the pile of garments that lay before us.

The answer to this dilemma is simple.  Ensure you have the wardrobe basics,  and build on them.  Once you have a great foundation, it's easy to add pieces to complete your outfit. Think of it this way: in your home your couches are basics - your foundation. Then you add pillows, paint colour, and wall decor to get your room looking complete.

The wardrobe basics are your investment pieces, and should make up 80% of your wardrobe budget. Basics should include things like:

  • A flattering pair of denim
  • A crisp white blouse
  • A pair of neutral pumps
  • A pair of flats
  • A little black dress
  • A fitted blazer

When you create a terrific foundation, you will not need to purchase an entire wardrobe to stay fresh and fashionable each season, you only have to add a couple of pieces (like pillows!).

This Fall and Winter, the fashion is incredibly versatile and rich. It's easy to find pieces to complement your wardrobe basics, but it's also easy to get overwhelmed.  I have created a list of my favourite key things to add to your wardrobe this fall:

1- A great plaid shirt.  It can be added to a pencil skirt and heals for a work look, or with a pair of denim and flats on the week end.

2- Anything leather/faux leather.  Nothing adds a fashionable edge like the look of leather. Leather/faux leather touches can be in a coat, a skirt…just about anything!

3- Animal print. Be adventurous and add a touch of animal print to your wardrobe. It's a fun way to add interest to any outfit.  If you hesitant, an animal print flat is adorable!

4- An oversized cardigan. Nothing screams Fall like a comfy, cozy sweater.  Throw an oversized cardigan over a basic black dress for a perfect effortless autumn look.

5- A silk blouse.  A fresh alternative to a blouse or even a t-shirt this season is a silk top, and it feels so good on :).
